Metamorphosis
Distibuted by Mystic Fire
Join three brilliant minds as they engage in a free-wheeling discussion about creativity, imagination and the hot new field of chaos theory. Held at the famed Esalen Institute in California, the discussion challenges contemporary science and suggests that things are not what they seem. Renowned biologist Rupert Sheldrake offers startling theories of memory and habit in nature while Terrence McKenna, an expert in the study of shamanistic behavior, shows the connections between psychedelic experience, nature and physics. Ralph Abraham, a leader in the new science of chaos, reveals how it ultimately is the birthplace of order and creativity. These fascinating concepts are made visible through stunning vvisuals created by Oscar®-winning filmmaker Hilary Harris, and underscored by original "trance" music.

A Glorious Accident
Distibuted by Films for the Humanities
Six leading scientists from widely diverging disciplines were first interviewed individually, in their own environments, and then brought together in a studio in the Netherlands for a discussion. It became an intriguing expedition to the boundaries of our consciousness, of science and of philosophy in search of an answer to the question of what science and its aspirations have brought us at the end of the twentieth century. In the invitation letter to the scientists it was formulated thus: "The guiding principle for 'A Glorious Accident' is briefly the one question: What are the concepts that our apparently unique consciousness has so far developed about our curious appearance in space and time? Alright, with cheerful determinism we have blown reality to smithereens. Certainly, we have let loose innumerable axioms and ideas about the question of what our consciousness is exactly. Yes, in all animals, neurosynapses, genes, formulas and daydreams we try to dissect ourselves to this end, in order to exchange views with each other of these phenomena. But to what understanding has this dizzying analysis brought us in the long run?"

Produced by Jeff Volk, 70 minutes.

New Physics and Beyond
Distibuted by Thinking Allowed
Biologist Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D., author of A New Science of Life, has stimulated and even startled the scientific world by challenging mechanistic thinking in the life sciences. Dr. Sheldrake proposes a startling alternative to the idea that genetic programming is solely responsible for diversity of form, development of behavior and development of mind in living creatures. The Universal Organism
Distibuted by Thinking Allowed
The so-called "laws of nature" may actually be more like habits and instincts than immutable and inviolable laws. Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D., biologist and author of the controversial A New Science of Life, suggests that from this perspective all of creation may be viewed as a living organism. This ancient concept, he says, challenges the notion of the universe as a mechanism with God as the great mechanic. (#S496)
