RESEARCH HELPER POSITION

We are planning to appoint 10 Research Helpers in March/April 2010. Please email us if you think you will be able to carry out this assignment after reading these further details. Ideally, you will think of yourself as intuitive, and you will have friends or family members who also think of themselves as intuitive, and who are able to take part in simple mobile-phone tests. You will receive £100 for completing the project, as well as a Certificate of Research Experience from the Perrott-Warrick Project, and you will also be eligible for taking part in further research, at a higher rate of pay.

Many people have noticed that they sometimes think of someone who then rings them soon afterwards, and say something like, “I was just thinking of you!” Is this just a coincidence, or could it involve telepathy or precognition?

In this automated test, the subject names 3 people whom she knows well, and registers their names and mobile telephone numbers at the address given below. The test then proceeds automatically until the subject has completed 6 trials. If everyone responds promptly, the whole process should last about 1 hour. The results so far show that some people can tell in advance who will be calling them more often than would be expected by random guessing.

For this project, you should first do the test yourself, with yourself as subject. Here’s how it works:

You will need 3 people to serve as contacts. These should be people you know well, who have mobile phones with credit on them, and they should be available to take part when requested to do so. When you register, you list your contacts in alphabetical order, so you can remember who is 1, 2 and 3. For example if you contacts are Ann, Jason and Zac you register them in that order so that Ann is contact 1, Jason is contact 2 and Zac contact 3. When you register, press the SUBMIT button only once. There may be a delay before the system responds, so please be patient!

The first trial begins soon after you register. You will receive a phone call from the system asking you to guess which of your 3 contacts will soon be calling you. You indicate who you think it will be by pressing 1, 2 or 3 when asked to do so. The computer system picks one of the people at random and sends him a text message asking him to call you through the system, and you then receive a call from him.

After a random time delay, usually less than 10 minutes, this process is repeated. Each time the selection of the person is random, and does not depend on who has been chosen before (just as in tossing a coin, if you get heads, then on the next toss you can just as easily get heads again as tails).

When all 6 trials have been completed, you and the other people involved all receive a text message to tell you the test is over. You will also be told your score. By chance you would get around 2/6 correct.

Once you have done the test yourself you will be able to explain it better to other people. You then recruit 5 more people to do the test as subjects. Please choose people who think of themselves as intuitive and who have experience of knowing who’s calling in real-life situations. Some of them could be the same people who served as contacts in your own test, and you can be a contact in their tests. In fact, you will probably find it easier to recruit people if you serve as one of their contacts yourself, and if you register the test online for them.

When you register you will be asked for a group name. Please pick a name of 5 letters and use this as your group name. Note: this name is case sensitive. Please use the same group name for all the tests you organize, including your own, so that we can recognize them.

On completion of this project and on writing a short report describing your experiences in doing and organizing this test, you will receive a cheque from the Perrott-Warrick Fund for £100.

If you or any of your subjects score 4 or more out of 6, we will ask you to organize more tests with those subjects at higher rates of pay.

If you have any queries, or encounter any technical difficulties, please let Pam know at the email address below.
